I have the middle model which I am using as a home system. The fans are
very quiet. (At power up the fans run noisily at high speed for a few
seconds then slow down.) The case looks good in a home environment. The
system comes with a USB mouse which has a center wheel instead of a
button (which takes some getting use to for someone that has been using
3-button mice for the last 20+ years). It uses 75 to 80 Watts
power when not heavily loaded.

After the first three weeks of operation, I started getting occasional
memory errors with reboots. This went on for several days
then stopped, with no problems in the last three days.

I have no experience with external dvd burners so I can't comment on
that. One option would be to drop another SATA drive into the system
to use for backup. You will need a 1 in. SPUD bracket to mount the
drive on (or buy a drive from Sun). I don't know if the connector
locations are standardized on SATA drives but you should be OK with
a Seagate drive (My system came with a Seagate ST380013AS.)
