I don't know if it's just because I'm using CD-R's instead of real CD's, or
something in the actual data or the way the ISO image was created. Maybe an
idea would be to download the previous HW update ISO's and try with those.

I did that. I downloaded the ISO zip file again too, then burnt another
copy. Identical result.
