There were some list messages about this recently. I recommend
checking Ebay, which seems to have plenty of inexpensive hardware
modems available. I bought a 16 bit PC card Xircom which has been
working perfectly, with no drivers other than the basic in kernel
modules necessary. See this list [in particular, the section "Modem

If you get a hardware modem, no special configuration of the modem
should be necessary. Just point your apps to the appropriate serial
port, and you'll be good to go.
