I had your problem using the X11R5 supplied version of xdm as a
login frontend (we used this frontend because it took less memory than CDE).
My modification was the change the source code; by using the getprpwnam()
function call to retrieve the required trusted record details.

Perhaps you could try an xdm other than the BARCO one ?
