Possible but not likely.

If you run Qt (KDE) and GNOME (GTK) applications at the same time, you
might use more memory than if you only ran one or the other. Unless
you're extremely short on memory, why worry about it?

You can remove any application you're not using, if the system doesn't
need it. Why not run Linux for some time, gain some experience, and then
start removing things you don't need? If you're determined to try to
improve performance by removing packages, you might start by looking to
see what services you're starting at boot time.
