In a word, "leafnode".

Leafnode is a two-part package: an NNTP server for your lan, and an NNTP client
to talk to outside news servers. The NNTP server provides your lan clients with
their news, and it uses the NNTP client to retrieve and send news to your ISP's
news server.

Leafnode only downloads the newsgroups that are actively being read on your lan,
and has aging controls to expire both news articles and groups as interests
change.

FWIW, I've been running leafnode for several years; it's saved my marriage and
my telephone.
