Thanks to all who replied. I ended up removing alsa and making a
SlackBuild script out of the "esound.build" script and
recompiling esound so now I have sound again. I'm still at a loss
as to why I was getting the error messages though.

When I ran alsaconf I got this one:
No PnP or PCI card found

When I ran alsamixer I got this one:
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
