Please do not top-post, and get in the habit of trimming excess quotes.
You will find this group a rather hostile crowd otherwise.

ISTM the problem, Jim, is that you lack so much of what we'd consider
basic understanding, that it's difficult for us to know where to start
with you.

Whatever you want to call it, posting a subject "help" is plain wrong.
Read that smart-questions page. You didn't even bother to tell us what
"older version" you got. You deserve all the flames you're going to get.
End of discussion.

When was that, Jim? And what have you been doing since then?

You didn't bother to read it, did you? Even after it being pointed out?

[leaving the link here because YOU NEED IT]

I will throw in an observation from your OP. You said you have a Sanyo
CD-ROM drive, and that the system can boot a CD. Since the ElTorito
standard for bootable CD's hit the market, so did the ATAPI standard for
CD-ROM drives. For a long time Sanyo-branded CD-ROM drives have adhered
to the ATAPI standard. IOW, you probably need the regular bare.i kernel.
