Not going to hurt friend's box.
You could use tomsrtb on the XP machine. I'm sure XP supports PLIP, but
couldn't tell you how to access it. Ask the little puppy. (then kick it).
I'm sure they have a different name for it.
Being as tomsrtbt is the best repair/rescue disk ever, and I can't imagine
running Linux without it, you could start by getting that done.
