For a lucent winmodem that is definitely what you need.

It is by far one of the easier things to compile. Definitely read the
1ST-READ file, but basically from inside the source directory do:
../build_module
../ltinst2
../autoload

Then configure whatever program you use to dial out.

I've been using the various versions of the ltmodem drivers from
http://www.heby.de/ltmodem since Mandrake 7 and now on Slackware
9.1/current with great success.
