I have the FB in console capability compiled. IMHO the disadvantages of
using it outeigh the advantage of seeing the penguin. For one I prefer to
see *all* my boot messages as they scroll by and you lose some using VGA
mode. OTOH in regular test mode you can just hit SHIFT-Page Up and go to
the top of the messages. Dmesg does not give me the same exact output.
IOW, my logs in /var/log, shift-page up and dmesg all have slightly more
or less information. Shift-Page Up gives the most useful for my purposes.
Even worse is the damn splash screen that Mandrake uses. First thing I
did with that distro is get rid of that crap.
But the real issue is do you *need* VGA in a text console (not in
Xas they are resizable anyway). If so go for it. If not, IMO it's useless. |
