I use the generic VESA framebuffer with the Nvidia.com binary-only
drivers. I don't find I have any problems with this combination.

The FB also allows you to view pictures[1] and have graphics in console
applications [2].

[1] You can use fbi to view pictures: <http://linux.bytesex.org/fbida/>
[2] 'links -g -driver fb' will give you a graphical web browser.
