Firstly, it might be a good idea to check that your hardware/system
setup is currently supported in 2.6. This link has some info:

AFAIK, (I have no personal experience), there isn't much that's needed
to be done to make 9.1 run a 2.6 kernel. The necessary versions of
module-init-tools and the like are already in place, but maybe you'll
need the alsa-driver package from /testing/packages/, if you're not
compiling your own.

I think it's very likely that a 2.4 kernel will be the default. Perhaps
the 2.6 package will make it out of /testing and in to /extra or be made
as a second kernel option, like 8.1.
