Did you setup /etc/fonts/local.conf?
That is the Fontconfig/XFT config file, and all the up-to-date Linux
software use that system instead the legacy X11 fonts.

xmms sucks, like other gtk-1 programs it doesn't use the Fontconfig/XFT
system and can't really support a modern internationalized Linux desktop.
