I've not built a kernel, but have had problems with many audio apps with
3.4. It seems that a lot of people are still catching up with whatever
source code modifications are required to keep 3.4 happy.

I've gone back to 3.3.4, and would recommend waiting until the dust
dies down a little before upgrading.
