One thing that you'll find helps a lot when working with computers is to
not let yourself get frustrated. It's just a machine. You've clearly
done what you're trying to do before, and you seem to have a pretty good
handle on it. Now we only need to figure out why the machine isn't

Not yet. Can you post the output of "lilo -v 2" (and perhaps even the
contents of lilo.conf), so we can see what is happening when you install
the boot loader?
