I'm not a specialist, but I have a question...

Are you sure that you've enabled the XRender extension in your Slackware
/etc/X11/xorg.conf ?

FWIW, under Slackware 10.0, xclock renders properly for me (no jaggedy
edges, smooth colouration, etc.). For that matter, it renders properly
under native Slackware 9.0. But... both of these systems have the
Xrender extension enabled.
