How nice for you :-( Why me, lord?

bb:/root>ps aux |grep lpd
lp 901 0.0 0.2 3352 1264 ? Ss 14:26 0:00 lpd

Yes, yes.

Nothing. catting to several likely devs (including /dev/usb/lp0, which
is what lp links to) produces this:

bb:/root>cat .gtkrc >/dev/usb/lp0
bb:/root>lpq
Printer: lp@bb
Queue: no printable jobs in queue
Server: no server active
Status: job 'root@bb+907' saved at 14:27:46.345
Rank Owner/ID Pr/Class Job Files Size
Time
done root@bb+907 A 907 (STDIN) 135942
14:27:41

Same result as before, just a different file.

We've had a Panasonic KXP-4420 for at least 10 years. Heavy sucker, and
slow. Something has happened to it that results in the bottom inch of
the paper being unprintable, so we sprung for the Samsung because of its
linux-friendliness. It's really fast, which is nice. It really sucks
to have to wait 5 minutes per page :-( The KXP DOES lpr simple text
files quickly, though.

I like xv with jpgs. Winmozilla prints properly, though :-( My mom
likes to print photos (she uses a profligate deskjet) but I'm glad to be
rid of the need to store paper.
