I think this should be read as "Thats the version Linus Torvalds has
tested the kernel against".

Patrick used this version when he compiled the kernel and I'm pretty sure
that if there was any known issues with gcc 3.3.4 he would have dumped
it for an older version or waited for a better one.

You have noticed that there has been problems with some older versions
of gcc and "newer" would include versions not yet released, versions
that could have problems.
