ES 1371, as I should have stated before.

Ah, post in haste, repent at leisure. I tweaked a few parameters in
Realplayer itself, and started getting badly distorted sound, as if I were
getting two feeds slightly out of sync of the same live broadcast. Then
after a while this problem sorted itself out and I started getting clear
sound. FWIW here is the output from lsmod |grep snd

snd-pcm-oss 36704 1
snd-mixer-oss 12152 1 [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-ens1371 11392 2
gameport 1420 0 [snd-ens1371]
snd-rawmidi 12320 0 [snd-ens1371]
snd-seq-device 3812 0 [snd-rawmidi]
snd-ac97-codec 52472 0 [snd-ens1371]
snd-pcm 54504 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-ens1371 snd-ac97-codec]
snd-timer 13412 0 [snd-pcm]
snd 31268 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-ens1371
snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-ac97-codec snd-pcm snd-timer]
snd-page-alloc 4712 0 [snd-mixer-oss snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device
snd-pcm snd-timer snd]
soundcore 3396 6 [snd]

The sound system is enabled again and on the mixer the only input selected
is line. Both the green and red lights are lit on that device. This may be
irrelevant.

On the output side PCM also has a green light, and that is essential.
