It happened to me at least once, IIRC it was an ati fglrx driver + new
kernel issue.
If it's fgrlx you can try radeon driver instead and see if it hangs
again. Or maybe you can trace the problem loggin in through ssh, even if
i think you'll just find X using 100% of the cpu.
