I have had this problem recently, but it has gone away for me in the lastest
Slackware-current. I haven't changed any configurations or drivers other
than the upgrades that have made it into -current. I use no third-party X
drivers, just the native xorg ati driver and radeon kernel module.

Interestingly, my default X session now appears to run F8 instead of F7, and
F7 is blank. Not sure why, but console switching works again, so I'm not
complaining.
