Some would disagree with this statement. Others, I admit, would
defend it. I would say that this is an un-settled issue. The "useful
purpose" is there for a PGP-signed message regardless of the medium,
but whether Netnews (alt.* is not "Usenet" proper) is an appropriate
medium for PGP-signed messages is certainly a matter worthy of debate.
I don't believe it's so simply cut-and-dried, though.

These would be the same "accepted norms of netiquette" that propose the
use of sig-dashes to clearly delineate the signature from the body of the
message, would they not? If you're so concerned about adherence to the
"accepted norms of netiquette", where are your sig-dashes?
