In addition to the good suggestions others have made,
there exists an even smaller Slackware-based distribution
for those who consider Damn Small Linux to be bloatware;
BasicLinux. It has two versions:

Minimum RAM version minimum requirements:

386 CPU
4Mb RAM
16MB HDD
NO Floppy required.

Minimum Ddisk space version minimum requirements:

386 CPU
12MB RAM (runs entirely in RAM Disk)
Two 1.44 mb floppy diskettes
One 1.44 MB FDD (two if you don't want to swap during boot)
NO Hard drive required.

In case anyone is interested in a small computer to run a
small Linux distribution, there is one that is 55mm x 22mm
(2.2 inches x 0.9 inches).
