there are quite many things that can go wrong

what comes to my mind right
now:
did you make a symlink to menu.lst ( lst like list, not first)? some older
versions of grub look for that config file, if I remember correctly.
do you have a symlink in /boot pointing to boot, meaning cd /boot/boot gets
you to /boot?
what does /boot/grub/grub.conf look like?
