I was in the process of installing gentoo on an X86 system, I was to the
point where the next step was installing and configuring the GRUB boot
loader.

I left it over night sitting at the command prompt, but we had power go
off.

What steps do I need to do before following the instructions for
installing the boot loader?

(The system was installed "by the book" using the same partition scheme as
in the instructions on a single IDE drive.)
