Default Bull's Samba 3.0.4.0 AIX 4.3.binary does not work?

Hi,

Today I downloaded and installed
http://www.bullfreeware.com/download...nv-1.9.1.0.bff
http://www.bullfreeware.com/download...ba-3.0.4.0.bff
on my up-to-date AIX 4.3.3 (4330-11) server.

Neither smbd nor nbmd start. I do not think it is a path problem.

$ export LIBPATH=/usr/local/lib:$LIBPATH

$ smbd
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program smbd because of the following errors:
0509-150 Dependent module /usr/lib/libldap.a(libldap.so.2)
could not be loaded.
0509-153 File /usr/lib/libldap.a is not an archive or
the file could not be read properly.

$ nmbd
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program nmbd because of the following errors:
0509-150 Dependent module /usr/lib/libldap.a(libldap.so.2)
could not be loaded.
0509-153 File /usr/lib/libldap.a is not an archive or
the file could not be read properly.

$ ls -lt /usr/lib/libldap.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 ldap ldap 23 May 24 2003 /usr/lib/libldap.a
-> /usr/ldap/lib/libldap.a

$ ls -lt /usr/ldap/lib/libldap.a
-rwxr-xr-x 1 ldap ldap 465392 Feb 4 2000
/usr/ldap/lib/libldap.a

Thank-you in advance for any help.

Regards,
DJ

David-

We're having the same problems with AIX 5.1 too. In the past we
experimented with getting OpenLDAP installed, to basically find that
it "cannot be done". I'm hoping to contact the Bull Freeware site to
get an explanation.

David-

I just did some checking on our system, again, and apparently we even
have openLDAP installed and the libldap.a file does exist, but it
doesn't contain the
libldap.so section. (So even if you compile OpenLDAP, I don't know if
it'll work) We're gonna attempt to compile it via source without
anything to do with LDAP.

Again, sorry, no good news.

Have y'all tried installing the version (2.2.7) from the AIX Toolbox?
http://www-1.ibm.com/servers/aix/pro.../download.html

Many times they better handle shared libraries than those from the Bull site.

Same problem in my shop after upgrade to 5.2 and I got so sick of
fighting with it and wading through all the samba stuff on the
internet that I just removed it all and replaced it with IBMs PC Fast
Connect. The PCFC is cheap and supported by IBM.

Back when we were using samba, I was having to reset the samba daemons
every couple of days because they would act all drop connections,
reject conenctions and just act flakey in general. All of the samba
documentation and some forummers I talked to blamed our problems on
the Windows machines which turns out was total bs since PCFC is based
on SMB just like samba and the problems immediatly stopped after
ditched samba for the IBM product.

I was always a little irritated by the fact that we were using samba
for a mission critical function anyway, so it was a very welcome
change. It may be a cliche, but you do get what you pay for.

Hmmm. Samba is pretty widely-used. We've been running it on AIX without
problem for years (on the LAN). It's just this update that seems
troublesome. Obviously vested interest of IBM prevents them from
bundling with AIX "Linux" software readily available on all Linux
servers. IBM sell their own web server too, so, their foot seems to be
in both camps. Scared to lose a buck. Like many!

That aspect of the issue did occur to me too, and the hard core unix
girl in me cries out at how bogus it would be for IBM to do it, but as
a systems manager I gotta balance the purist in me with my ability to
keep things up and running smoothly.

OK - I got Samba to work.
I downloaded the openldap RPM package from IBM's site and installed it.
It installed the software in /usr/opt/freeware/...
In /usr/lib, there is a libldap.a -> /usr/ldap/lib/libibmldap.a
I removed the link and created a new one.
ln -s /usr/opt/freeware/lib/libldap.a libldap.a in /usr/lib.
Now it works.

Default Re: Bull's Samba 3.0.4.0 AIX 4.3.binary does not work?

Has anyone got this to work. I have an AIX 5.2 sys and download the
bulls binary. I am getting the same ldap errors. I download the IBM
OpenLDAP on
http://tinyurl.com/7vb4u

installed fine but now I get the following when I try to start samba:
exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program /usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd because
of the following errors:
0509-150 Dependent module /usr/lib/libldap.a(libldap.so.2)
could not be loaded.
0509-153 File /usr/lib/libldap.a is not an archive or
the file could not be read properly.
0509-026 System error: Cannot run a file that does not have a
valid format

I did notice the ibm binary for openldap loaded the libraries here:
ls -l /usr/lib/libldap.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root system 27 Dec 11 9:52
/usr/lib/libldap.a -> /usr/ldap/lib/libibmldapn.a

Thanks in advance for any help.
