Sorry, but sftp is not ssl, but based on ssh.

Right. To put it another way - did the OP really mean SSL (which
offhand, I don't recall hearing of any) or SSH, where there are (again,
as I recall) several.

Could bbftp be a solution ?
It is based on SSH but data transfert is not encrypted (like with SSH)
to speed-up large file transfert.

Just have a look at http://doc.in2p3.fr/bbftp/index.html if avoiding
large data file encryption in secured file transfert is your problem.

I have made good experiences with ftp-tls, downloadable from
ftp://ftp.runestig.com/pub/ftp-tls/
(I used it on Solaris, but it should compile on AIX too).
