I recognised your firefox issue because we noticed firefox being a dirty hog recently when we switched to 1.0.6 from Blastwave.org (what build, vendor is your firefox?) So to try my theory of firefox being the culprit I surfed to mrmuncher for a few seconds of fun!!! NOT this is what I assume about your setup 1 x AMD64 Solaris 10 JDK 1.5.0_?? firefox 1.0.? and you notice Xorg going nuts....... HOWEVER get this, I notice the same.... EXCEPT 2 x Sun UltraSPARC III+ Solaris 9 JDK 1.5.0_01 firefox 1.0.6 And sure enough Xsun (the solaris 9 SPARC X server) process goes nuts and hogs a CPU - in fact not what we had noticed previously with a firefox hogging a CPU. If I kill firefox and the java_vm plugin which runs mrmuncher I notice Xsun remains at 50% (2 CPUS) I have to logout and end the Xsun process to get the lost CPU back!! Fairly different hardware and OS and X server, but same Java and I assume recent firefox..... I've noticed Java being utterly shite at X stuff before but it's hard to tell where the problem lies... So I got down the java game files and tried to run them locally using appletviewer. - removing firefox from the chain - but it won't run. some thread access exception or other.... I also think the problem with your fan may be a minor hardware issue, with the thermostat. I've noticed an old Laptop in the past where I few seconds of FAN spin would cool the CPU enough to turn the fan off only for it to heat up enough a few seconds later to turn it on again - a perpetuating cycle until i moved the laptop to a breeze outside and it stopped. You may wish to try some CPU thrashing toolkit to test out your fan activity with out the software mess in tow!! does anybody else noticing MrMuncher successfully munching X servers ?? !!
