I'd select Scribus and Rosegarden for that special occasion and Gimp is a full good tool too. > Konsole and > Terminal are great as well. Mmm, I stil prefer the use of 'Eterm' and 'screen' but I'll admit I _also_ use 'konsole'+'screen' > > The best gui is XFCE4.4, using KDE apps. Almost agreed on that, I've been using it for a long time but a few years ago I softly switched to 'full KDE', then seeing the light I jumped up and strung up 'fluxbox', I'm still using a few KDE stuff, 'KMail' when not in 'pine' or (recently) 'claws'. For my old habits around ratpoison and/or stumpwm that's a sign I'm slowly gliding down to windoze hubbeets, in a few centuries I'll be almost prepared to try the downgrade ;D) > > The best editor is vim. Still I prefer elVIs, at least I'm not bovvered by clumsy colors and flashing brackets pairings any old time, and when I open up a file I really prefer to be positioned on the first line of the fragile file instead of having an instantaneous prosopagnosia while facing the last line the previous admin read when he decided to doze off. > The best CLI newsreader is tin. Not bad, really, I used to like it, but I also used to like slrn so maybe this "vote" won't count :-) > > The best mail & news client is Thunderbird and it ain't even close. KMail is very good, the only piece of it I don't like (technically speaking, as in functionality and feelings I'd have more to scratch) is that it builds up a specific local index/tree. Not a big trouble when you've got a few minutes and MB to install a local imap server so as to give it a Bronx smile (or was it a Brixton cheer...) but that's not really I recently started to test Claws and it's much better in many ways, the look and feel is maybe a bit harsh for longhornkers I used TBird a long time in parallel with Eudora (yes) and they both had their pros and cons tipsy topsy > > cordially, as always, > > rm Yes, you delicately and so discreetly, as always, avoided to name the most useful tool ever: # rm -rf /. Those things, while useful features to some of us, are not particularly Vim defaults but are configured as such on Slackware. I have been a Vim user for several years and was pissed off by some of the new "defaults" when the global vimrc was changed with the release of Slackware 11.0. There is a solution, however. <http://www.slackware.com/announce/changes11.0.php>: set all& " reset all options to compiled in defaults (thanks to deryni in #vim) unmap Q " remove mapping to gq syntax off " turn syntax off filetype plugin indent off " turn filetype detection off augroup! vimrcEx " delete the autocommand group that wraps text, etc. -- James Michael Fultz <xyzzy@sent.as.invalid> Remove this part when replying ^^^^^^^^ |

Get's my vote. vifm vfu deco I think you can still get XTree for Unix, maybe others. Some dude is kinda porting DOS Navigator to Linux but, last time I saw it, it wasn't ready for prime time. None of those are much good at the present time except vifm, though. BTW, FWIW (not much): The best linux app is [apps are] bash and friends. (mc with 'lynx-like motion' makes a great alternative to 'cd;ls', though.) The best X Window app is seamonkey. The best gui is fvwm, configured to be like a souped-up evilwm The best editor is vim. The best newsreader is slrn. The best mail client is mutt. |
