I have been dealing with the same problem and have found a workaround:

When you kvm to your linux box press ctrl + alt + f1 to switch terminals
then press ctrl + alt + f7 to return to your now working x session.

I tried it, no luck seems my kvm switch is hell bent on getting slammed
down onto concrete with maximum velocity
