I am trying to think of the most efficient way to deal with data entry. I
have approximately 200-300 forms with names / addresses / 4 ticked boxes
indicating other fields of interest for each person. I currently can only
think of manually typing in the data. Can anyone think of a way to automate
this data entry perhaps using scanning with ocr or some other clever method
?
I am in the design phase of this project so even the design of the form on
which the data is produced can be adjusted to facilitate any clever fast
system.
I am proposing to build a MySql database to hold the data which will come in
by way of handwritten forms and also via website. The website data is fairly
simple to automate the data input to the database but it's the handwritten
forms coming in by post that is causing me problems.

....my only other suggestion is to sort the returns into 16 piles
(based upon the combination of boxes ticked) and get typing

Well yes.. it does look like they do the job but 12,000 UKP for the service.
Whew... quite steep.
