| Hi I'm interested in Gentoo because of its updating system (don't remember its name...) but I wonder if I can use it on a plain old 56k modem connexion ? Is it just impossible or only very looooooong ? Thanks for any advice about that ! |

Well, initially, very long. I would get an install cd and the packages cd and install from that medium first. Then, SOME updates (X, java-sdk, kde, gnome, etc) will take a bit to download, others will not take long. But if you stay current, it may not be too bad if you stick with the system libraries and minor packages. |

| I just want a very minimalistic box, web browser, web server, open office and that's it. I started with a CD and have been using portage (the updating system) ever since. I usually download at night. The download rate is typically about 5,000 bytes a second or about 18 megabytes an hour. Downloading a new kernel takes about two hours. Of course, you can do other things, including things on your computer, during the download; you don't have to sit and watch it. Also, downloads can be stopped and restarted. A fast computer is desirable, not for the downloading but for the compiling afterward. Sometimes compiling can take longer than the download and I have a 3 GHz Pentium 4. I do update the software on my computer nightly using portage. The source code for openoffice is over 220 megabytes, which will take over 12 hours. The binary code version is about 78 Megabytes or a little over 4 hours. Ivar |

The main problem you might face is dropped connections. So even if you wanted to run it, you could get cut off without warning and wonder why? If I am not mistaken, this could take 2 hours! Am I right? 56Kbits/second / 8 =7kb/second 50MB = 50000KB 50000/7 = 71428571 seconds 71428571/60 = 119 minutes (assuming you get top speed all the time) OTOH, a stage 1 install (not sure what that will get you though) is only 14MB and you have a greater likelihood of succeeding with that. Good Luck! I do it, but it can indeed be very slow. I often use --fetchonly to make sure I can get all the files before I start compiling. -- Bobby Bryant Austin, Texas |

| Ariane enlightened us with: > I just want a very minimalistic box, web browser, web server, open > office LOL OpenOffice.org (that's the name, not "open office") is not really what I'd call minimal ;-) Sybren -- The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself? |

I've never done gentoo on dailup but I did run a linux from scratch box on a dailup connection for two years it was possible but the initial setup i.e. downloading of sources will take a *long* time (i.e. leaving the dailup line on over night for about a week). Once it is setup though unless you like experimenting with lots of new programs it will be not to much hassle -- Joel Mayes |
