Why ask here? Why not use the official "kaput" site?
http://bugs.gentoo.org/

Because I believe, both as a practical matter and as a matter
courtesy, that I should
always check first to see if other people are having the same problem
that I am having
before I bother the developers about it. As often as not, the "problem"
is on my side,
not the developers'.

What the hell else do you think usenet is for? A Stalag 17 for
self-appointed
internet police sergeants to mill around and shout "RTFM!" at each other?

Then at least you should be a little more courteous and post a bit
more than a stack trace. I'd expect "Could someone please help me
figure out how to fix this before I annoy the developers with this?"
instead of:

Grow up and try to become as courteous as you proclaim to be.

You do realize that bugs.gentoo.org has a search function?

This is really uncalled for...

You are right. After

..$ ftpcube
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/ftpcube", line 21, in ?
from libftpcube import main
File "/usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/libftpcube/__init__.py", line
29, in ?
sys.stderr.write (_("ftpcube - Compilation error: %(reason)s.\n")
NameError: name '_' is not defined

..$ qpkg -I -i ftpcube
net-ftp/ftpcube-0.4.3-r1
Graphical FTP client using wxPython [
http://ftpcube.sourceforge.net/

I should gave added the sentence

"Has anyone else seen these error messages?"

Has anyone else seen these error messages?

Do you know what causes them?

Thank you.

p.s. I have been unable to connect to Gentoo's Bugzilla for the past
three days;
no matter how many times I type "ALL ftpcube" in the search box, It
keeps saying

Please press Back and try again.

Probably, but not me.

Nope.

Try going back to a known-good version by masking this one.

Works just fine for me.
