| Bluddy kernel developers messed up CD burning. So I'm wondering about sticking with 2.4. I thought gentoo-sources would be 2.4 and gentoo-dev-sources 2.6 but an upgrade left me with 2.6. Is the 2.4 line of gentoo-sources still going to be maintained? If not, is there a kernel tree that is keeping to 2.4 but with new stuff? And is there anything I have to be aware of if I'm staying with 2.4? Thanks |

Screenful of error after error, and doesn't want to listen to ctrl-c. |

I care not if it's stable only; I look for posts such as yours to indicate if I want to try a new kernel I'm _happy_ with 10-r6 and plan to sit here awhile. -- oNb Another happy Linux user - # 276084. There's a long-running disagreement between the kernel maintainers and the cdrecord maintainers: http://programming.linux.com/article.../12/09/1341236 Considering that cdrdao and even NeroLinux works fine on the 2.6-series kernel, it would seem that cdrecord is broken, not the kernel. > So I'm wondering about sticking with 2.4. Rather than do that, I decided to switch to cdrdao instead. Currently I have linux-2.6.11-gentoo-r5 with cdrdao-1.1.9 (both being latest stable) and burning works well. > I thought gentoo-sources would be 2.4 and gentoo-dev-sources 2.6 but an > upgrade left me with 2.6. Since 2.6 is a stable-series kernel, it was moved to the proper place: gentoo-sources. gentoo-dev-sources will contain developmental-series kernels, like linux-2.5.x or linux-2.7.x . > Is the 2.4 line of gentoo-sources still going to be maintained? I should think so. It'll probably become what 2.2 was to 2.4 - vulnerabilities are fixed but no new features are added/backported. However, given the choice between a 2.6-kernel and cdrtools, I'd go for the benefits of the 2.6-series any day. Hth, -- Ben M. |

But there isn't going to be a 2.7 line, development is happening in 2.6. So that's the only thing gentoo-dev-sources could be. If we're following official kernel.org policy gentoo-sources and gentoo-dev-sources would both be 2.6, which seems to be the way it is, but to my mind that's a bit of a waste. > >> Is the 2.4 line of gentoo-sources still going to be maintained? > > I should think so. I know redhat backports lots of features to their 2.4 kernels, would a redhat kernel play nice with a gentoo system? > > However, given the choice between a 2.6-kernel and cdrtools, I'd go for > the benefits of the 2.6-series any day. > I haven't noticed any showstopper problems with 2.4 kernel, and don't notice any real differences using 2.6 as I am at the moment. Wheras not being able to burn CDs is a showstopper for me. I'll give cdrdao another go before I make a final decision. |
