For your education: All DOS, Win9x, and WinME systems basically have a
DOS kernel, most of them have a fancier and fancier GUI planted on top
of that much as Linux has a Linux kernel and an X11 GUI and various
window managers stuffed on top of it.

NT of various flavors, Windows 2000, and Windows XP all have basically a
VMS kernel, stolen by David Cutler and his merry gang of software
pirates from DEC by Microsoft. (Search the web for the lawsuit history,
it's fascinating reading about how Microsoft's "development" efforts are
so often blatant theft.)

Note also, that this was about when DEC was giving up on VMS and
switching over to UNIX due to its many advantages of flexibility and
multi-user use. That's *why* they let Cutler go, they weren't going to
publish the "PRISM" release of VMS he had worked so hard on.
