Of course you can install it if the card is big enough. It's not
any different from a hard drive from that standpoint. On the other
hand, such cards don't like too many writes, so if it's your only
"partition" the routine writes of the logs and your own usage is
likely to wear it down pretty fast.

But, the big issue is how will you boot? YOu can get more recent
computers that can boot from the USB port, so a USB flash drive or
USB external hard drive can be used to boot a computer.

But I've never heard of any computers that boot off cards in a cardreader.
Unless this is something that's now been introduced, and you have a
computer that will boot that way, then the project will never work.

On the other hand, if you have something else in the computer that will
boot, and put a bootloader of some sort on it, then maybe you can use
the sd card for the installation. I guess it would depend on whether
being able to read the card comes early enough in the boot process.

Of course, you can get ide to compactflash card adaptors (or make your own)
and then the compactflash card would presumably look like an IDE drive
to the computer, and hence you could boot from it.

There are USB cardreaders for SD cards. You can use these like regular
USB sticks, so there is no problem booting from them.

This unit (http://www.addonics.com/products/fla...er/adidesd.asp)
plugs into an IDE connector (either 40-pin or 44-pin) and lets you use an SD
card just as you would a regular hard drive.

I've built similar systems from Compact Flash adapters, and they work like a
charm. One caveat: don't swap to 'em...

Of course. I have one of those myself. I just wasn't thinking it through.
