| I have been given the job of installing Oracle 9i Rel 2 on an Intel box running Fedora Core V4. Does anyone out there know if this is possible and if so where I can find some info. I have already tried an install but it failed straight away with some missing packages however an attempt to get some of the missing packages failed beacause they were not compatible with some other packages....... This is beginning to look complex and time consuming and I do not wantr to spend days trying only to have to say in the end that I can't do it. TIA Paul |

| Paul, To share my views: 1) Is it POSSIBLE to have oracle 9i R2 on FC4? -Yes 99.99% it will work...only few weeks ago I got oracle 10g on hp machine . It gave many errors to begin with...but finally I could manage to get it through. So I think you should be able to have it done. 2) The other question would be SHOULD YOU DO IT? -If you see oracle certification matrix on metalink , it is noted there that only redhat linux is supported for oracle and so installing oracle fedora core 4 is NOT SUPPORTED. So we should NOT DO THIS for any serious work -any industry project- basically because oracle does not support it. 3) Regading practical issues in installation, i found that registering at www.fedoraforum.org & posting in their forums was very useful. it has a complete installation guide for installing fedora 4. and any OS related issues of rpm etc should get resolved there. 4) Now for installing oracle on fedora linux (if it is decided that it IS TO BE DONE .) then I found this link very useful: http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub...b_install.html (i wanted it on my home pc on work we have oracle on solaris) There were a few other links too, but it 3 weeks now and I forgot..just search net and you will see them. hth N. |

FC4 it targeted at the Workstation market, and the brave customers on top of that. FC releases every 6 months Do yourself a favor, and install White Box Linux (Red Hat 3 in disguise); you'll have none to almost none issues while installing. Server releases appear once every 2 years, approx. and aim for stability, not the latest drivers for yet another graphics board -- Regards, Frank van Bortel Top-posting is one way to shut me up... |

| I agree with Frank, I would suggeest you go for the RHEL "clones". CentOS is great, in fact the only difference it has with RHEL are the logos and some RH proprietary packages (if I'm not mistaken). It's almost having an Oracle-certified configuration without the actual certification ;-)... of course Oracle won't go against their partner. www.centos.org |

Yes, this was a real pain to get the installer running. If you have more precise questions about these installation problems, don't hesitate. Jerome |
