| Hello group: I have a 5.0.6 server with Merge 5.3 installed that was performing just fine. Now I have a situation where sporadically the network tcp traffic freezes. Serial connections are fine. System console is fine. Cannot ping other computers and vice-versa. tcp stop/start does not clear the situation. Using double vision, I can attach to the tcp telnet sessions and close the running programs that are character based. After a reboot of the server, all is well for a while. During shutdown there are two complaint messages for which I do not remember the text, and I believe these to be from attempts to close a share to another OpenServer computer. The network card was replaced. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanx Ron |

Did you notice anythin unusual under /usr/adm/syslog ? What does "ndstat -l" report ? Two conditions I've seen this:. - Cheap network cards - why people put $10.00 cards in important servers is beyond me.. - Not current driver (see ftp://ftp.sco.com/pub/openserver5/drivers/ -- tony@aplawrence.com Unix/Linux/Mac OS X resources: http://aplawrence.com Get paid for writing about tech: http://aplawrence.com/publish.html |

You might try removing the 100Mbps card and installing a 10Mbps unit (the highest speed that used to be supported by the former software company, SCO). Openserver becomes very unstable when attempting to handle moderate volumes of network traffic (we experienced severe IO errors and disk corruption when attempting to use OS as a mail relay for an office of 23 people). Using a slower card will give the kernel a chance to handle the load. I believe you can purchase a licence for an "enterprise" level kernel or something from SCO that will handle fast 100Mbps speeds. -- FyRE < "War: The way Americans learn geography" > |

Disk corruption blamed on a network card? No wonder people like me can still make a living.. >Using a slower card will give the kernel >a chance to handle the load.
