| I've got this 12MB voodoo2 siting around and thought I'd run the X server on it. Xfree86.org refers to a "glide" driver but there's nothing in the X server drivers directory. What I would like to do is to run X on this card and replace the S3 that runs only with fbdev driver. Thanks joseph |

Good memory. :-) Indeed, it is... if you had a Banshee, though, you have the 2d side of things as well. AFAIK, you have to plug a Voodoo2 into another card to get things working properly with it. I never had the opportunity to play with that, though, as I went right to the Voodoo3 from my 4MB graphics card days. -- Rob | If not safe, Email and Jabber: | one can never be free. athlonrob at axpr dot net | -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/mZgEhm6KEoOOAe0RAuwYAKDji2qb3y1KCTJdjmezyalmaWsZqQ Cg5aTU X0KcDa+xXgQJMrSC9riVpyM= =d4Dl -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

With the correct driver, X can use the Voodoo2's glide api to draw on to the screen. I looked about for glide driver for X, but nothing came up. linux.3dfx.com seems to have disappeared. I did get this card working once, under readhat 6.0 for linux games. That was so long ago I forgot how I got it to work. |

That seems like it would be very hard on running a fast system... glide just isn't going to be as easy on the CPU cycles as a plain old 2d video card would be. linux.3dfx.com is likely down as 3dfx no longer exists. nVidia bought them out quite some time ago. > I did get this card working once, under readhat 6.0 for linux games. In fact, you'd probably have to look pretty hard for a low-end card that couldn't provide you with equal performance.. I'd drop $50 on a GeForce4 MX 440 if I were you. -- Rob | If not safe, Email and Jabber: | one can never be free. athlonrob at axpr dot net | -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.2 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/mbJ9hm6KEoOOAe0RArhDAKCcCK/LlaxLMKktmv52DFC9jQqzagCg17b6 bB5xZhfP1DDYE0fqWPQeaPQ= =IS+k -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

But, 1. the voodoo2's ramdac is still operational. 2. It can generate a 1024x768@85-16bit screen 3. it's got 6MB per render chip I hate wasting working things; especially when I bought them at about $300 each (I used to have 2 of them ). Any clues? |

Good grief, this isn't hard at all. |

Good grief, this isn't hard at all. My bad. I never expected to find it all nicely packaged and all on the 9.1cd. Thanks for the pointer. |

You won't be able to run an X server off of the Voodoo2, I have one sitting around as well, the glide renderer is for games only, as the Voodoo2 hardware is only 3d, no 2d. Unless you can find a 3d X-server (I remember rumour of one floating around). Good luck! |

What you /can/ do though is use the 3d chip(s) on the Voodoo cart to accelerate games running in an X-window. Mesa can read the rendered output of glide from: `/dev/kmem'. In that case you wouldn't need the VGA "loop cable" connected either. (Which might otherwise fuss 2d output a bit.) /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs/3Dfx-HOWTO -- -Menno. |
