I use a2ps, and there is a special setting for hp deskjets which
need "wider medium".

This may vary for you, but I have:
In /etc/a2ps-site.cfg:

Options: --medium=Letterdj

and in
/etc/a2ps.cfg :

# Desk Jet users: bigger margins
Medium: A4dj 595 842 24 50 571 818
Medium: Letterdj 612 792 24 40 588 768

You can also do a groups.google search for "deskjet a2ps medium "
