Default arrgh...no text

I finally got around to doing a clean install of 9.1 on my notebook, Gateway
Solo 5150SE. I figured it would be an improvement over the triple boot of
W2K XP Pro and 9.0. The problem I'm running into however is all the text in
KDE is either missing or is just a short line, like maybe a place holder
where the text should be. This happens for icons on the desktop, menus,
dialog box, you name it. I switch to GNOME and everything seems fine, text
on icons, menus and windows are fine.....except for the logout screen where
I get the little lines where the text should be. This is driving me
nutz.....

The solo uses a neomagic 256av chip with 4mb of ram, 14" lcd at 1024x768, I
don't think it has to do with the config of x since I do get a "normal"
desktop in GNOME and even KDE "appears" correct size and color wise, it just
the darn text...or lack of it. I'm ready to go back to 9.

any help appreciated
thanks
Bill

So you never had these problems with 9.0?

nope....I verified that by wiping the hd and doing a clean install of 9.0
and it's running fine, everything is displayed correctly. I even did two
clean installs, including repartitioning, of 9.1 with the same result
