| I was told by the mandrake people (i use mandrake linux) that slackware people could be of help. I'm having a tough time with Linux. I just went to transgaming.com and downloaded winex - to play games under linux. I always follow instructions exactly - but stuff never works for me. The problem I'm having now - when I try to install quake 2 under winex (which is a supported game) - I'm getting the following error: winex3 /mnt/cdrom/setup.exe Building font metrics. This may take some time... Done building font metrics [root@localhost bob]# wine: Unhandled exception, starting debugger... There is nowhere on the site to get support. I don't even begin to know how to debug or fix something like this. It's not just winex, either - this happens to me a lot with Linux software. I'm disabled. I used to be an os/390 systems programmer - I took cipro for a prostate infection and it did damage to my brain. I'm trying hard to get back functionality by working at Linux - but I need help! I am willing to pay by check or paypal for assistance with this problem - or any problem that I can't solve. It will benfit me - from what I'll learn - and it will benefit you - because I will pay for your time and help. Anyone that thinks they can help - please email me at bobbygr@email.com Thank you very much in advance, Bob -- Using M2, Opera's revolutionary e-mail client: http://www.opera.com/m2/ |

Simply because slackware users may not be very familiar with other distros, and it should not be expected from them either. It is true however that Slack users maybe more familiar with Linux, but not nesacarrily with how other distro are setup. good luck. |

Interesting, and possibly true, because Slackware people tend to build greater understanding because the OS doesn't shield us from the details. As I've said, Slackware's greatest weakness is also one of its greatest strengths: it does not do as much for the admin. > I'm having a tough time with Linux. Unfortunately this sounds like an area in which someone might need to be onsite in order to be effective in helping you. You might do better taking this matter to your local LUG. > I always follow instructions exactly - but stuff never works for me. The It could be that your Mandrake install is missing some necessary components. > [root@localhost bob]# wine: Unhandled exception, starting debugger... Perhaps the debugger is saving some information about the crash, and that information could help you. > I'm disabled. I'm sorry to hear that. *&^%$# "modern medicine" for making guinea pigs out of all of us! If you'll tolerate me slipping into advocacy, it's possible that you'd find Slackware more to your liking. It has a much simpler design philosophy, and as such it stays out of your way when you want to do something. > I am willing to pay by check or paypal for assistance with this problem - This particular one is outside my area of experience. Your problem sounds specific to winex. All applications do not run well in the emulator. Some of these apps can be used by modifying your winex configuration. A more pertinent subject line would attract a more pertinent set of people to your problem. May I suggest: "Problem with quake2 and winex"? May I also suggest you indicate what distribution and version? |

I've personally found it quite a bit easier to get things going with it. Use it to install WineX as well, and each game you want to play. As far as the Mandrake bit, I believe someone else has suggested (as I would) that you might find Slackware a bit easier to manage. If you are (or were, as the case may be) computer savvy, Slackware tends to be a bit less of a headache than those other distros. I've tried loading Mandrake on my wife's system as I wanted to try a "user friendly" distro to recommend to my Windoze-using clients, but I messed it up within a day while trying to make it do what comes so easily with Slack. |

You can get the files for quake2 from http://www.quakeforge.net/ unfortunately that does not include an installer. If you wish to continue with winex anyway I can give you a few hints. That which you download from the cvs is not stable. Only the binaries are. So if one version of winex seems not to work, remove it and download a new version. Quake 2 should definatly work under winex but i don't know abou the installer. > It's not just winex, either - this happens to me a lot with Linux > software. And the exact probles you get wih other programs is? Or is it just that generally you have trouble getting things to work. > Anyone that thinks they can help - please email me at bobbygr@email.com I try to reply only to the newsgroup because then others can use the knowledge as well. The > problem I'm having now - when I try to install > quake 2 under winex (which is a supported game) - I'm getting the Hi Bob- I don't have any answers for your WineX issues, unfortunately (I very rarely use Wine/WineX these days, and it is definitely a constantly evolving target)... However, I do a little bit of gaming here on my linux boxen. I actually have played Counterstrike (Half-Life engine game) under WineX, but only by following howtos and stuff. Primarily, though, when I game (lately anyway), I use games that are supported directly under Linux, or I... *ghasp*... boot in to Windows. Quake2 is not only a supported WineX/Transgaming game, it's also a game with a full Linux port. If you're interested in going that route, I can rip some URLs out of my Gentoo ebuilds for you. From the looks of it, though, I only have info on the "The Icculus linux port of ID's quake2 engine" tied together with the data files from your quake2 CD. I haven't actually played Quake2 under Linux in the last... ohhh... I want to say five years, but that might be a little bit high. It's been since my Voodoo3 3000 was a top-of-the-line video card. I, personally, prefer Quake3 over Quake2. If your system can swing it, the Linux port there is a bit more mature, I think, and not fragmented. It even supports a few of the mods, including the UrbanTerror mod (which is quite popular). I've run quite a bit of Quake3 on my laptop in the last year or so. It works very well. There are other games supported well under linux... here's a list of my games-fps (first person shooters) directory under Gentoo: aaquake2 quake2-data rtcw aaut quake2-relnev savagedemo americas-army quake3 soldieroffortune anaglyph-stereo-quake quake3-alliance tenebrae avp-cvs quake3-alternatefire timestamp.x blackshades-cvs quake3-cpma transfusion-bin cube quake3-demo ttyquake doomlegacy quake3-nsco unreal duke3d quake3-osp unreal-tournament enemy-territory quake3-ra3 unreal-tournament-bonuspacks freedoom quake3-ruinhunters unreal-tournament-goty industri quake3-threewave unreal-tournament-infiltration legends quake3-truecombat unreal-tournament-strikeforce lsdldoom quake3-urbanterror ut2003 nprquake-sdl quakeforge ut2003-demo prboom red-blue-quake2 vendetta-test quake1 rott wolfgl If you like Puzzle games (I can't get enough of Marbles, myself): 4stattack fbg icebreaker mindless pingus wakkabox atomix gemdropx kiki mirrormagic quadra xblockout codebreaker greedy lpairs neverball quintalign xbomb construo groundhog ltris neverputt tetrinet xwelltris cuyo gtetrinet magiccube4d pathological timestamp.x enigma gtkballs marbles penguzzle toppler If you're interested in more games, I can email you (off-list) all the games Gentoo has ebuilds for (which means you can get it working with Mandrake, too, likely without too much hassle). And, finally, if you're trying to really jumpstart your brain to get yourself back in Computer mode, I think you might find Slackware a better choice than Mandrake. If you're used to Unix, you'll probably see a lot more you remember with Slackware, as well. It's a rock solid distribution. It definitily doesn't waste your time trying to do everything for you. -- Rob | If not safe, Email and Jabber: | one can never be free. athlonrob at axpr dot net | -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.3 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/rJu6hm6KEoOOAe0RAmPBAJ49SYArjFxy7PlynDZ+gRV9J0zTSQ CfUBSR PeVyo5cjBfskU9xISVvhRU8= =EmSy -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

As far as WineX goes, you mentioned you were using Mandrake and I'm hedging to bet on 9.2, the problem with the recent builds of WineX (the downloadable binaries) are that they have posix threading issues with the most recent glibc 3.2.3 IIRC, which ships with slackware and I'm sure Mandrake... you can try using the following command, winex3 --use-pthreads yes /blah/setup.exe and see if that helps, if not, we may have to wait for WineX 3.2 which supposedly has a fix for this, otherwise you'd be looking at recompiling glibc without pthread support :-( <pain in the ass in my opinion>. I play most of the games I like with their native Linux ports though as Athlon Rob mentioned, so you might want to try that route as well =). Good Luck! Drew |
