Yeah, i tried to reinstall, but it didn't work, but i didn't remove
and install, anyway i'm trying to update to new alsa libs/drivers/blah
blah.

Ran into the same problem after upgrading to 2.4.23 a while ago. Just
remove (instead of upgrading) any ALSA packages on the system and install
the latest 0.9.8 ones. Run alsaconf and it'll detect your soundcard
correctly this time around.

If you're working from sources a recompile will also get you there.
