Now I'm running Slackware-9.1 on a ThinkPad 600E (for my fiancee) and a Sony Vaio for me. I bought the latter with Slackware pre-installed from EmperorLinux.com because I do not have the time to futz with it. I've not run winduhs on anything for the past six years and have yet to find anything in my business (or personal computing needs) that would require it. Having a good users group locally, with an active mail list, is a really big help, too. Rich -- Dr. Richard B. Shepard, President Applied Ecosystem Services, Inc. (TM) <http://www.appl-ecosys.com> |

It's an omen! I've got a vaio laptop, Athlon based. Nice machine. I installed slack 9.1 last night and it works just fine, I'm quite thrilled. During my googling, though, I found several disturbing warnings. Mostly along the lines of "Fried CPU alert!" "Patch ACPI or Die!" etc... in usenet too. As recently as July 25th of this year! So now I am in terror mode, and took the battery out of the laptop when not in use until I can get verification. Has that patch been applied already in 2.4.22 (the stock bareacpi.i on the slack 9.1 install). Feel free to LART me soundly if this is a stupid question, on the condition that you answer it anyway. -- "Why would burgulars need to look for a backdoor when they can climb in through Windows?" --Norman L DeForest, in NANAE "You know how dumb the average luser is? The Thinkpad R40 also works well with Slackware 9.1, and one of the cheaper configurations (P4 2Ghz 30Gb CDRW/DVD) can be had from Insight for < 800 GBP. One of many pages on the R40: http://www.beezmo.com/ThinkPadR40.htm (describes the Centrino version, but mostly applies to the other models in the range). Pretty much everything works with the standard Slack installation with a bit of fiddling, except the Winmodem (which needs a hacked smartlink driver you have to download and compile yourself) and DVD movie playback (the included Xine binary will work once you supply libdvdcss from videolan.org). If you buy a ThinkPad, get hold of the XP recovery disks from IBM before you install Linux, in case you hose the 'predesktop' recovery area by mistake (recovery CDs aren't shipped by default, but IBM will supply them if, for example, you're considering a hard disk upgrade). In my opinion Slackware ( as any other Linux distribution) should run properly on every machine which components are supported by kernel (linux). So, first you have to find out what hardware do you have. You have to know what controllers, PCMCIA cards, video card, sound card, etc. you have in your laptop. Next, make some small research if hardware you find in the laptop is supported by kernel (google.com/groups.google.com is the best way). If you hardware is well known and supported, the last thing to do is to install Slackware on the laptop ;-)) You may also install Slackware without any research and let Slackware to try to find the proper drivers himself (while booting, etc.). I'm using Panasonic Toughbook CF-25, very old (P166) & nice machine. I couldn't find what exactly hardware it has, so I tried to install Slackware and had no problems. Everything goes fine, X-Window, PCMCIA, IRDA (I use also GPRS connection through Nokia 6310i by IrDA), Sound card. So, along the resarch through the Internet the second very good way is to try & test if it works. If the kernel runs on it, you're probably in good shape. I don't usually bother with a modem anymore, so the only thing I usually trouble about is making sure the video adapter works with XFree86. My standard recommendation is to check http://www.linux-on-laptops.com/ and http://www.tuxmobil.org/ to see other people's results for the laptop in question. Kurt |
