| I am reluctantly considering to install Suse 9.0 on a Tyan Tiger dual Opteron MB, which I am planning to buy. I do this reluctantly, since I have been a Slack user since v3.x (for servers only). When a new version of Slack with full support for the AMD64 architecture and a 2.6 kernel is out, I will definitely switch back. So is that anyone out there who can give me the skinny on SUSE for the Slack user? Anything to look out for? Any quick hints? This will be a server box, running MySql 4.x, 4gb etc. No GUI, no desktop stuff, just crunching. My only experience with Suse was I played with Suse 7.x for S/390 on a Hercules emulator once. Thanks everyone, Nuz PS. I still only use Slack for my other servers, its just this one that I want/need a dual Opteron machine for. |

It might be an excellent opportunity to work on a Slackware-x86-64 port. :-) Slackteron... it a nice ring to it, no? > So is that anyone out there who can give me the skinny on SUSE for the Slack > user? Wow, nice board. 1) You can download and install any kernel with slackware 9.1, since it's got the necessary glibc versions for 2.6 kernel. 2) SuSE is nice for desktops, honestly, but I don't think it's meant for the server, when compared to Slackware/Redhat or FreeBSD, but that's just what I've read on the internet. 3) SuSE is rpm-based, and I never liked rpm's. Support will be only for installation. However, it will look very nice, and it has graphical interfaces for configuring firewall and such. 4) With any linux, if you can, specify your hard drive to the kernel before boot (hda=1023,256,63 where hda is the drive (hd = ide drive, a = first drive, first channel, 1023=cylinders, 256=heads, 63 = sectors per track, etc) and disable RAID if the first boot attempt fails. Go by what the hard drive says on it for cylinders/heads/sectors/tracks. 5) Uh, if you're not installing GUI, then SuSE is a waste of time, in my opinion. If you want secure, slackware would seem to be more configurable, but then again there's IMMUNIX, which is meant for servers and for ultra-security. -- An exotic journey in downtown Newark is in your future. |
