| Slackware ver 8.1. with an attempt to set it up as a file server(samba). I'm trying to set up an old box(233 mhz) with a 160 gig wd ata 100 promise controller. Fdisk picks it up as /dev/hde and see's 255 heads/63 sectors/16709 cylinders. If I stick it all in one large partition I get: Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/hde1 1 16709 134215011 83 Linux What s the best way to get all of this drive? Last time I tried I could only get 137 gig of this drive(or at lease thats what df reported) so I thought it was just a kernel limitation and installed some newer patches but it looks as if I'm in the same boat. Someone spin a man page at me please. Thanks Dennis |

Can't point you to a man page, but apparently there is a 137GB (128 binary GB) limitation to older IDE controllers; see (for example, apologies for the long line) http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc....ted=1031763968 - --keith - -- kkeller-usenet@wombat.san-francisco.ca.us (try just my userid to email me) AOLSFAQ=http://wombat.san-francisco.ca.us/cgi-bin/fom -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.3 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/3kmYhVcNCxZ5ID8RArNYAJ9PjG1gkz7mdrluW09f7GOZao0l2w CfXylw G1a9i6Py0LCHcwWSqjD4R8Y= =cne6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

I tried it with the onboard ide controller and it has an 8 gig limitation but slack 8.1 see's 137 gig of it. With the ATA 100 slack 8.1 see's only 137 gig of it. I tried to make one big partition using fdisk and it reported, after using mkfs.ext2, only 50 gig of it and 100% was used???????? I really am twisted on this one....in the past linux(even old version's) always saw the truth....and I mean the whole truth about every drive I threw at it......I'm sure it's only something I'm missing....or a new trick. It IS an OS issue, one that was fixed in kernel 2.4.19. Why are you starting out with such an old version? There have been many bugs fixed since 8.1 was released. Your machine is fine for 9.1, and in fact you'd probably find that everything will work! -- /dev/rob0 - preferred_email=i$((28*28+28))@softhome.net or put "not-spam" or "/dev/rob0" in Subject header to reply |

The OP would have the same problem with the 137GB barrier on a 2.4.18 (or earlier) kernel without special patches. -- /dev/rob0 - preferred_email=i$((28*28+28))@softhome.net or put "not-spam" or "/dev/rob0" in Subject header to reply |

If you showed some consideration for other posters by refraining from pgp unless necessary then perhaps you wouldn't have so many problems. cordially, as always, rm |
