Default Excessive Memory usage?

um, hi guys,
Although this isn't affecting the systems performance, I have 512MB of
memory on a Compaq P3-450, running slack 9.0.
My problem is:

the system is using something like 98% of the memory, yet top doesn't
produce anything thats actually using memory.
At the moment, its reporting 511Mb of memory in use, with 800k swap in use!

I'm not sure how to pipe the output of top to a file to show what's
happening.

Any ideas?

Simon

That is the default behaviour of the Linux kernel .
Why would have you bought such memory and dont use it ? ;-)

The kernel uses all ( most ) available memory and frees some if necessary .
Dont worry about that .
If you dont have heavy load applications running , consider it is "caching"
some files .. as sometimes, wrinting to Hard Drive is not immediate , it
stores it into the RAM ... ;-) ...
