| Hello Slackware Users, I had been running Slackware 9.0, and had sound without having to do anything other than install slackware on my machine. I recently upgraded to Slackware 9.1, and i have no sound. the kernel is 2.4.22, using the bare.i kernel, with hdc-ide-scsi If I do an lsmod - i get all kinds of "sound" information, including the correct chips, etc (ymf for yamaha sound card) What do I need to do to get the sound to come on? Volume is up, etc,and the "volume" control appears in the upper right of Gnome 2.4 screen. Below is output of lsmod: Module Size Used by Not tainted tdfx 32448 1 snd-pcm-oss 37252 0 snd-mixer-oss 11992 1 [snd-pcm-oss] uhci 24496 0 (unused) usbcore 58400 1 [uhci] ne2k-pci 5504 1 8390 6000 0 [ne2k-pci] crc32 2880 0 [8390] snd-ymfpci 42816 1 gameport 1452 0 [snd-ymfpci] snd-pcm 55904 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-ymfpci] snd-page-alloc 6004 0 [snd-ymfpci snd-pcm] snd-opl3-lib 5764 0 [snd-ymfpci] snd-hwdep 4672 0 [snd-opl3-lib] snd-timer 13252 0 [snd-pcm snd-opl3-lib] snd-mpu401-uart 3136 0 [snd-ymfpci] snd-rawmidi 12512 0 [snd-mpu401-uart] snd-seq-device 3920 0 [snd-opl3-lib snd-rawmidi] snd-ac97-codec 37240 0 [snd-ymfpci] snd 27460 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-ymfpci snd-pcm snd-opl3-lib snd-hwdep snd-timer snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device snd-ac97-codec] soundcore 3332 4 [snd] ide-scsi 9424 0 agpgart 39576 0 (unused) help! | Hello Bartosz, et al. I have run alsamixer, but it does not seem obvious how to "mute" or unmute the sound card. I see the MASTER, and MASTER mono graphs, and can run volume up and down and select "off" by pressing "M", but still no luck in terms of sound. The Gnome cd player thinks it can play, and the aplay -t wav ding.wav thinks it plays a ding, but my ears hear nothing. Is there a separate "mute/un-mute" command? Thanks for the info, eric Bartosz Oudekerk wrote: > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > Eric W. You are going to have problems, as well, if you use pgp. But that's ok because, not only is there no reason to use pgp in this ng, but its inline use violates usenet netiquette and this group's policy. You are asked not to inline pgp unless it is absolutely necessary. Thank you. cordially, as always, rm |

You don't need the cable for windoze but you need it for linux. cordially, as always, rm |

| Yep, what he say... run alsaconfig then alsamixer to unmute the channels (see 'man alsamixer'). There's a bunch of stuff you have to turn on. Also make sure isapnp is not trying to load OSS modules (isapnp.conf should be empty of sound) and modules.conf should only have Alsa entries. Too many pnp modules fighting for dominance. I fought for ages on Slack 8.1/9.0 with the OSS modules for a Yamaha OPL3Sa2 (IBM thinkpad), upgraded and hade al those /etc/ files getiing in the way... A clean install and I went straight to alsaconf. Note: If you ungrade (upgradepkg) to the 2.4.23 kernel and associated pkgs from ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/ , removepkg asla-???-0.9.6-???? and then installpkg alsa-???-0.9.8-??? and run alsaconfig & alsamixer again. For some reason upgrading alsa didn't work after upgrading the kernel and kernal libs. Patryk wrote: >"Eric W. | Good Point! about cable, I can't remember if I put one in! I will have to open the box! I did get the sound going for wav files, and streaming audio over the I-net.
