| Hello, I have a small problem when I attempt to install a slackware 9.1 on a desktop computer, where the harddisk is 100GB. I have a NTFS partition of ~20GB with winXP, an extended one with a 20GB FAT32 and a 512MB swap. Finally, the remaining space ~60GB is shared in two free partitions available for linux (30GBx2) Now when installing lilo during the slackware 9.1 setup, I get the following error: Cannot open /proc/partition and lilo does not install. I have tried with a 30GB unformatted partition (set w. partition magic 8) then quick formatted to jfs (with adequate kernel support). As it has failed, I formatted the partition to ext2 under PM8 with winXP, and then retried to set a jfs partition with the Slack setup. Both returned the same error, I think partition magic is guilty, but I don't know how to solve that problem. -- niko |

Once you've done that you can be certain the partition itsself is alright. I hope this is of any help to you, good luck. - -- Bartosz Oudekerk Play Rogue, visit exotic locations, meet strange creatures and kill them. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.3 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE/6G5p256ZyNYAOpkRAk9BAJ9lJOFzjbzNdhkMltGS3eyYnurTfg Cgh9Ie JMz0bnppPVQF67y0gw8HhZQ= =1DIO -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

Hi, someone suggested me that it was not good to have logical partitions before primary ones, and, like you, to use (c)fdisk. I am going to try this evening - thanks a lot! -- niko |

Perhaps the problem is the unwarranted use of pgp? As you know, the inline use of pgp violates usenet standards of netiquette and this ng's policy. Please refrain from using pgp unless absolutely necessary. Thank you. cordially, as always, rm |

Two partitions a primary one and extended one created and used by MS-Glassware. Good!. Large part of the disk unused (partitioned or not by anything). In this part you want to install Linux. VERY Good!!! Start the install, when prompted call (c)fdisk, delete whatever kind of partitions exist in this part and recreate partitioning, primary or extended and install. I found that when working with different OS's it is best to use tools "native" to each OS. Saves a lot of grief. Have fun Stanislaw. Slack user from Ulladulla. |

I recently experimented with that structure on my Dell Latitude laptop, and can confirm that while Slackware worked just fine on the logical partition, Windows hated being on the misplaced primary (it took forever to start up, and many tools such as Ghost, Partition Magic and Drive Image mply refused to work from that partition for various reasons).
